Workplace Safety in Australia

Australia takes workplace safety very seriously. Every worker has the right — and the duty — to a safe workplace. This course teaches you the basics so you start your job confidently and safely.

What you will learn

  • Your legal right to a safe workplace.
  • Common safety signs and what they mean.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) — hard hats, gloves, high-vis vests, safety boots.
  • How to report a hazard or near-miss.
  • What to do in case of an injury.
  • The "white card" requirement for construction sites.

Course format

  • Short reels.
  • A short quiz at the end.
  • Takes about 20–25 minutes.

How to take it

  1. Open the Courses page.
  2. Tap Workplace Safety in Australia.
  3. Watch the reels.
  4. Take the quiz.

Points and badges

  • Earns OES points.
  • Counts toward the Practical Pro badge.

The big things to remember

  • Safety first, always. You can refuse a task you believe is unsafe.
  • Wear your PPE at all times on the job site. No PPE = no work.
  • Report incidents — even small ones. Hiding an injury can hurt you later.
  • Speak up. If you see a danger, tell your supervisor immediately.
  • Drugs and alcohol at work are not allowed. Random testing is common.

Warning: In Australia, an injury at work that is not reported can become much worse — both for your health and for any worker's compensation claim.

What is a "white card"?

The white card is a basic safety certificate that every worker on a construction site in Australia must have. It is a one-day course you take after you arrive, or in some cases online before. Your employer will help you book it.
