Australian Workplace Culture

This course explains how Australian workplaces work — how people speak to each other, what is expected of you, and the small things that make a big difference in your first weeks on the job.

What you will learn

  • How Australians like to be addressed (first names are usual, even with the boss).
  • What "fair go" means and why it matters.
  • Punctuality — Australians value being on time.
  • Speaking up — your boss expects you to ask questions and share ideas.
  • Smoko, lunch, and tea breaks — what they are and how they work.
  • Workplace safety culture — everyone is responsible.

Course format

  • Short reels.
  • A short quiz at the end.
  • Takes about 20–30 minutes.

How to take it

  1. Open the Courses page.
  2. Tap Australian Workplace Culture.
  3. Watch the reels.
  4. Take the quiz to finish.

  • Earns OES points.
  • Counts toward the Country Expert badge with the other Australia courses.

Quick cultural tips

  • Direct but polite — Australians say what they mean. They are rarely offended by clear, polite questions.
  • Equality on the worksite — bosses and workers eat lunch together and use first names.
  • Respect for safety — never skip a step to "save time". You can stop work to fix a safety risk.
  • Ask if you do not know — your team will help you. Pretending you understand can cause problems.

Tip: Watch a few Australian YouTube channels in your free time to get used to the accent. The more you listen, the easier it becomes.
