How to Ask a Former Employer to Verify You
If you cannot get an Employment Certificate from a former employer (because the company is closed, lost your records, or is hard to reach), the portal can ask them to verify your work for you. This is called Referee Verification.
How it works
- You add the contact details of someone who supervised you (your boss, HR, or the owner).
- The portal sends them a secure email or SMS link.
- They open the link and confirm your job title, dates, and duties.
- They sign — either digitally or by uploading a signed letter.
- The verification is added to your portal automatically.
You do not need to chase them by phone or email yourself — the portal handles the back-and-forth.
How to start a Referee Verification
- Sign in to the portal.
- Open the Documents page.
- Find the Employment Certificate for the job you want verified.
- Tap Request verification from referee.
- Type the referee's full name, email address, and mobile number (at least one is needed).
- Type the job title you had and your dates of employment.
- Tap Send.
Who can be your referee?
A good referee is someone who:
- Supervised your work directly.
- Has a work email address (preferred) — for example, hr@companyname.com.
- Will respond within a week or two.
You should not use:
- A family member.
- A close personal friend who never worked with you.
- Someone who would not want to be contacted.
What if I do not have any contact details?
Try these:
- LinkedIn — search for the company and find an old colleague.
- Facebook — many small Filipino companies have Facebook pages.
- Google — search for the company plus the city.
If you really cannot find anyone, talk to your Cirrus contact. They can sometimes accept other proof, such as payslips or a BIR Form 2316.
How long does it take?
Most referees respond within 3–7 days. If yours has not replied after a week, see What to do if your referee doesn't respond.
Tip: Tell your referee in advance that an email is coming so they do not delete it as spam.
