Quick rules to remember

  • Left side of the road, driver on the right of the car.
  • Wear a seat belt at all times — front and back seats.
  • Never use a mobile phone while driving, not even to look at the map.
  • The legal alcohol limit is much lower than in the Philippines — for most workers it is essentially zero.
  • Speed is measured in km/h, not mph.
  • Roundabouts are common — give way to vehicles already in the roundabout.

Warning: Penalties for breaking road rules in Australia are heavy. A single speeding ticket can cost more than a week's wages and may affect your visa.

Converting your Philippine licence

  • Your Philippine Driver's License is valid for a short time (3–12 months depending on the state) after you arrive.
  • After that, you need to convert to a state licence (NSW, Victoria, QLD, etc.).
  • The process usually involves an eyesight test, a knowledge test, and a small fee.
