Skills Assessment

The Skills Assessment is a short, online test where you rate yourself on the skills relevant to your trade or job. The result is added to your profile and helps employers see what you can do.

Why it matters

  • It earns you 50 OES points.
  • Employers use it to short-list candidates.
  • It only takes a few minutes.

How to take the Skills Assessment

  1. Sign in to the portal.
  2. Open the Tools page or look for Skills Self-Assessment in your Next Best Tasks.
  3. Tap Start.
  4. Read each question and pick the answer that best describes your level.
  5. Be honest — picking a higher level than you really have can hurt you in interviews and on the job.
  6. Tap Submit at the end.

Tip: Answer as you would in a real conversation with an employer. There are no trick questions.

What happens to my answers?

  • Your answers are saved in your profile.
  • A summary appears on your Skills Assessment document card.
  • Employers can see the result.
  • You earn points right away.

Can I retake it?

Yes. If your skills have grown — for example, you finished a new training course — you can retake the assessment to update your result.

  1. Open the Tools page.
  2. Tap Skills Self-Assessment.
  3. Tap Retake.

Why it might be marked as needing revision

  • You skipped questions.
  • The reviewer noticed a big mismatch with your work history (for example, you said "expert" in a skill not on your resume). In that case, finish your resume first, then retake the assessment.
